What is SHOK?

SHOK (Stop Hurting Our Kids) is a group of parents from all corners of America who are compelled to speak out to protect innocent children from Wal-Mart – the world’s biggest seller of children’s toys and bicycles. From Texas, Georgia and Illinois to Utah, West Virginia and California, these parents are speaking out to warn families across the country about the dangerous Wal-Mart bikes that have seriously injured their sons and daughters.

Wal-Mart Is Hurting Our Kids

Over the last five years, Wal-Mart has been selling defective children’s bicycles (some of which were recalled in 2002) that have a history of malfunctioning and causing permanent injuries to children.

Despite direct consumer complaints and mounting evidence that the bikes have caused multiple accidents and extensive physical trauma to children, Wal-Mart accepts no responsibility for any of these accidents to this day. Front wheel quick-release bicycles are still being sold in the toy department of Wal-Mart stores.

The company has even sued an elementary school math teacher and hurricane victim in Louisiana for five times more than the meager settlement amount that she was misled into settling for by Wal-Mart’s hired claims investigators.

What SHOK Wants Done to Protect Our Kids

These concerned parents from across America believe that:

Wal-Mart should be held responsible for selling dangerous and defective products, and
The company’s predatory approach to these consumer complaints needs to change.

What You Can Do To Help

Based on these courageous parents’ experiences with this corporation, it seems that nothing short of a public outcry will convince Wal-Mart to Stop Hurting Our Kids.

One Mom's Story

Cathy Belyeu and her 8-year-old son Colton

State: Texas

For his 8th birthday, Cathy Beyleu drove her son Colton to their local Wal-Mart store to pick out a new bike. Colton scanned the various models until he came upon his birthday selection, a bright yellow Next Ultra Shock bicycle. With a grin from ear to ear, Cathy brought her elated birthday boy and his new bike home to celebrate this special day.

On June 18, 2001, Colton took his birthday bike out for a ride along their quiet suburban cul-de-sac. Navigating his bike from the sidewalk to the street, the front wheel of Colton’s bike became completely detached from the frame and his body was suddenly hurled over the handlebars. Face-planting into the rough concrete, Colton laid bloody and badly injured in the street.

A neighborhood boy who witnessed Colton’s horrific accident immediately ran into the Beyleu house announcing what he had just seen. As in every mother’s worst nightmare, Cathy came running from her home to find her child covered in blood and retching in pain. Without hesitation, Colton’s father Daryl charged to the street and scooped his son from the ground.

Carried in his father’s arms, Colton was immediately admitted into the emergency room of their local hospital. After hours and hours of testing that included CT scans, X-rays and mobility tests, Colton returned home shaken and in excruciating pain. It wasn’t until weeks later that doctors discovered that, in addition to his many injuries including permanent brain trauma, Colton’s nose was still fractured and required corrective surgery.

Daryl contacted the local Wal-Mart store to inform them of the accident and to explain that the bike’s front wheel had fallen off without warning. The local Wal-Mart store representative told him that he had never heard of such a thing and offered little assistance.

The Beyleu family values their privacy; they have joined SHOK and agreed to share this very private and painful story because they never want another child to suffer the ongoing problems that Colton deals with today.
